New for this summer, the Cheat Mountain Stables are planning to open June 29th at their facility near the Silver Creek Lodge. They don't have too much information up yet, but you can watch their facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/CheatMountainStables) for more details at opening day approaches. We look forward to giving them a try and hope that they have a very successful summer. Get out there and enjoy the 11,000 acres of beautiful WV scenery and the cool summer temperatures.
Snowshoe posted a few historic pictures of the mountain and they got me distracted to go see if I could find some more. I wan't too successful, but I did come across a little article about the old Spruce Lodge which sat in the way of the construction of Expedition Station. It was originally built in the mid 1970's and hosted nearly a million overnight guests before it was demolished in 2005.
We looked at purchasing a unit at Expedition Station which was built in it's place, but the studios just didn't suit the way our family wanted to use a place at Snowshoe and the two bedroom ones were a bit out of our price range. What was interesting was that according to the article, all 100 units sold out in less than four hours in early March of 2005 -- for what I can only guess were double or more what they are selling for now. It's a very nice place, but we're pretty glad we bought where we did at Mountain Lodge. The common areas and the pride many of the owners take in theri units is pretty cool. We also have one of the most financially sound and well managed homeowners association that wil keep the buiding in good shapre over the long term. We know it's not the fanciest place on the hill, but we argue that it's probably one of the most comfortable!
We have set up a direct link to Liftopia, the number one place to get lift tickets. Liftopia built and manages online prepurchase tickets for resorts all over the country and even the Snowshoe Resort site uses their technology to sell their tickets on the main resorts webpage. It doesn't matter where you get you tickets -- but whatever you do make sure you buy them ahead of time.
Almost all resorts have now moved to ridiculously high prices when you buy them at the ticket window the day you want to use them. However if you know when you'll be there and how many days you want to ski you can save over 80% on you tickets (of course depending on your dates -- although they will always be cheaper online!) Liftopia offers multiple day passes and packages that also include your rentals and lessons -- all at discounted prices.
Read the fine print, the value tickets are not refundable and only good for the date listed on the ticket. If you're not sure about the dates, there are other options that will give you the flexibility to change dates, but you'll pay more for this benefit. If you use our link below to buy your tickets at Liftopia, we receive a small referral fee and we appreciate it!!
